My 9-year-old niece is asking for romantic novels for Christmas, specifically something not written for kids. I'm thinking Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott to start with, but I wanted to see if the community had any recommendations.
Obviously I'm not looking for anything racy or overly dark. She can handle adult prose, but she is 9 after all.

Maybe a YA romance novel? Alice Osman’s Heartstopper graphic novel series might be nice, I can’t remember anything super inappropriate in it.
Austen and Alcott would be way too dense for a 9 year old.
Most of L.M. Montgomery will fit the bill. Louisa May Alcott’s lesser known novels like Eight Cousins, Rose in Bloom, and an Old-fashioned Girl are good options. Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster is super cute too.
She might be a little young for Austen at 9, but I suspect you’d know best about that!
A lot of the kids at my school are asking for romance that isn’t for kids and it turns out they want the adult dark romance books they see promoted on TikTok. So maybe something by Kasie West or the Selection series.
{Night Sky by Suzanne Brockmann} is YA with a teen girl superhero. It’s been a minute but I remember LJ Smith’s vampire series being an easy read without any inappropriate details.
