So, I recently joined a book club, the kind where everyone picks one book to read before we meet and discuss it for hours like civilized intellectuals sipping tea (or pretending to). It sounded like a great way to build a new habit and maybe expand my brain a little.
Here’s the plot twist: I can’t seem to start reading. Not because I’m lazy (okay, maybe a little), but because reading has never really clicked for me. I want to like it. I like the idea of reading the atmosphere, the quiet, the aesthetic of holding a book but when I open one, my brain just goes: “nah.”
I didn’t join the club out of obligation. I joined because I want to want to read if that makes sense. So I’m not looking for the usual “just pick up a book” or “why join a book club then?” answers. What I really want to know is:
How did you go from being someone who didn’t enjoy reading to someone who genuinely does? Was it a specific kind of book, author, or mindset shift that changed things for you?
I’m open to any practical or psychological tricks that help bridge that gap between wanting to read and actually enjoying it.
