Hey everyone 👋
I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately — with so many books being released every day, it’s harder than ever for new authors to stand out.
When you’re scrolling through Kindle Unlimited or a bookstore shelf, what actually makes you stop and click “Read more”?
Is it the cover, the first line, the premise, or just a gut feeling?
As someone who just went through their first publishing experience, I’m genuinely curious what draws readers in now — especially for young adult or adventure stories.
Would love to hear your thoughts! 💬

I generally only listen to audiobooks, so my favorite narrators generally open me up to new authors all the time.
I read whatever strikes me. Whatever seems like something current (even if its an old subject or set in the past) a new fiction book has to feel vital to this current era for me to get intrigued.
The cover. I go to bookstores and walk around until I see something that looks interesting. I read the back or inside cover and decide if it sounds like something I’d enjoy.
Sometimes recommendations I read on Reddit or hear about on NPR.
Typically something related to a book im reading. So i guess, “The Algorithm.” But i have been rewarded. I gound Jo Nesbo’s books, which are fantastic.
The cover design tells me 90% of what genre it is. Since all genres look basically the same. If I’m interested I’ll read the summary / synopsis. Decide from there.
I certainly have a lot of opinions. Both as a reader, and as a book seller. Are you a writer?
Connections – either i heard an author i like talk about it, find it mentioned in another book or hear someone i respect mention it
