Looking for a gift for my father-in-law! He’s recently been reading the Slough House series by Mick Herron and enjoying it. Not looking for anything pulpy or mass market-y (he’s not into John Grisham, James Patterson etc. – more Amor Towles, Percival Everett).
I was thinking something in the mystery genre, but fiction or non-fiction both good – he also reads a lot of biographies (American history mainly), Patrick Raddon O’Keefe, Jon Krakauer, etc. A great non-fiction read on the inner workings of/a scandal in an intelligence agency could be fun.

You might try the Sean Duffy series by Adrian McKinty. They take place in Ireland during the troubles and frequently involve trying to solve a crime while navigating between the 2 sides.
Ben MacIntyre’s non fiction books on espionage are all great. Operation Mincemeat, Double Cross, A Spy Among Friends, The Spy and the Traitor.
