The premise of the story interests me a lot, but I've read that Stephen King's noodle was pretty baked while he was writing it, and that the story suffered overall because of it. Through interviews and reviews I've read over the years I assume he was drugged up to some degree when he wrote some of his best stories, so I'm having trouble taking this criticism of The Tommyknockers at face value. As a casual King fan who has enjoyed The Shining, It, and The Stand, is reading The Tommyknockers something I might enjoy?

Late last night and the night before Tommyknockers Tommyknockers knocking at your door! I want to go out, don’t know if I can, ’cause I’m so afraid of the Tommyknocker man!
The Tommyknockers was one of my favs! I have a very love/hate relationship with King, but this one I really enjoyed.
Tommyknockers is solid old school king, with good character building. You’ll likely enjoy it. I did think it feel apart a bit towards the latter half, but greta character building for sure.
It is decent, but he has better books. It has some good build up, but it just doesn’t quite deliver the way you hope. But, if you are bored, it is worth a read.
I thought it was good but I read it 10 years ago. Would the me, now, like it? I think, probably. Earlier king stuff is wild but compelling
