I finally gave Guy Gavriel Kay due attention last year and this year and I am SOLD on the idea of epic fantasy stories in a standalone format.
I read Under Heaven first, immediately fell in love with his gorgeous style of writing, and have since gone on to read.
• The Lions of Al-Rassan
• A Brightness Long Ago
• Tigana
These books prove to me that sweeping, meaningful epic fantasy… epics… are both possible within a single, thick volume.
I then discovered L.E Modesitt Jr’s Recluse Novels, very smart and cozy fantasy adventures with good lessons.
I liked his episodic approach, you can hop in anywhere you want in the Recluse saga, each novel is a self contained and complete story for the most part.
I’ve come across a few others, but not many, The Children of Hurin by J.R.R. Tolkien is a good standalone.
Tad Williams’ War of the Flowers.
I cannot think of any other ones. And I would love more standalones in this genre.
I’ll never finish Wheel of Time, I made it to the end of book three – was thoroughly exhausted and had no desire to get through the next twelve books.
My book club is about to begin Malazan book of the fallen, it’s ten books long but I’m ok with that because apparently it’s a masterpiece beyond what any other 10+ book series has ever achieved.
But I’m breaking my own rule by reading it.
I usually don’t bother with anything that goes beyond four books these days. There’s just not time for anything longer. Tad Williams is the king of the quartet series. After Malazan, I’m refusing to read any series that goes beyond four volumes.
Am I alone in wanting more standalones in fantasy?
Anyway, what are some of your favorite standalones in epic fantasy?

I am actually writing an epic right now. Though I’m unsure what you mean by standalone volume. Do you mean a single series of books or a single book for the entire story?
My story has definitive endings after each book of course but a single story arc persist across the 8 books.
I definitely enjoy epic fantasy short stories and novellas – I don’t have the time to read series anymore, but epic fantasy standalone novels are right up my alley.
I have a book club that loves fantasy but series are always so contentious. We don’t want to be reading 10 volumes in a row!
There are lots and lots of standalones. Go over to the fantasy reddit and there are many threads there and recommendations about this. I read standalones all the time.
