If you like psychological horror that keeps you uneasy without relying on jump scares or monsters, you might really enjoy The Butcher of Hollow Street by Khalid Hatem.

It’s set in Victorian London, where a string of murders hides something far darker than just a killer. The tension builds slowly — it’s more about what’s not being said, the eerie quiet between moments, and how sanity starts to decay behind polite society.

It’s not gory, but it’s deeply unsettling in a “you can’t quite put your finger on why” kind of way — exactly that quiet dread you mentioned.

    2. Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer gave me that constant sense of creepiness and unease – It wasn’t really scared, just WTF is going on and something is about to happen.

You may be looking for something a bit more intense, but I had to mention this one.  Good luck on your search!
