Literary movement in which writers competed to write the most incomprehensible novels?

I read something not too long ago while doing some research about William Faulkner's The Sound And the Fury, and I'd come across something about a period in this era in which certain writers would "compete" to write the most incomprehensible- or at least wordy- pieces they could. I'm struggling to find much else about this.
