I'm looking for those brilliant, breathtaking books that flew under the mainstream radar. I want to discover an author whose work feels like a secret I'm in on.
For reference, I think writers like Helen DeWitt (The Last Samurai) or Laszlo Krasznahorkai (Satantanga) are geniuses, but most people have never heard of them.
Who is your "hidden gem" author and which of their books should I start with?

If you like fantasy, I submit Christopher Buehlman, The Blacktongue Thief
Pirateaba, because they wrote The Wandering Inn, which is currently 15 million words long. It should be a lot more famous than it is right now. If nothing else, it would make a good Did You Know Wikipedia Article.
Mark Helprin. Incredible writer!
