Ending of 1984 scares me most. If they just killed Winston then it wouldn't be as terrifying. But he gives in, and he is happy about it.
I have only read one horror book from start to end, and that is shadow over innsmouth. Both books have a ending where protagonist just gives in. And not just out of helplessness but even willingly. Cause they see some profound truth in whatever they have witnessed and learned.
I want to get more into horror genre, and I am looking for some books with similar vibes. With a sad ending, where protagonist betrays readers in one way or another.
