What’s an excellently written detective/noir book for a newbie to the genre?

I usually read literary fiction or modern classics. I love Sally Rooney and have really been getting into women writers. I also love Lonesome Dove, and currently reading East of Eden.

Looking to get into the detective genre, but don’t want to waste my time with anything poorly written. Give me human emotion, give me depth, give me complexity (but without pretension).
