I also lost my interest in books for a very long period of time. Jeannette Walls’ riveting memoir, “The Glass Castle,” helped bring me back to reading again.
What genres of tv shows/movies do you most enjoy? Just to get an idea of what types of books to recommend, in case your tastes have changed since you were younger.
May I suggest project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. The audiobook is an amazing performance if you want to try listening to it.
If I’m in a slump I find that YA or Middle-grade are often what can break that slump. There is just something about the accessibility and the creativity that does it for me. Something in the youthful element often brings me back to some simpler times. On the opposite end of the spectrum a horror book can often break a slump. It one of my fav genres and can really excite me in a way that’s going to get me consuming more.
As far as more recent YA/Middle-grade books go, I would recommend the Amari series by B.B. Alston, The Hide and Seeker series by Daka Herman, the Ravenfall Series by Kalyn Josephson, and The Legacy of Orisha series by Tomi Adeyemi.
For horror for someone in your situation, I recommend Suffer The Children by Craig DiLouie, Salem’s Lot by Stephen King, Devolution by Max Brooks, and Black River Orchard by Chuck Wendig.
Did you mean the Neverending Story by Michael Ende? It’s a favorite of mine and you should try that author’s other novels. Also, Astrid Lindgren is a great European middle grade fantasy author. I’m obsessed with Ronja the Robber’s Daughter and the Brothers Lionheart. Like the Neverending Story, those books are very fantastical but also emotionally challenging with loveable characters.
