Hi everyone!
I’m trying to get into audiobooks and would love some recommendations based on books I’ve enjoyed.
Here’s a sample of what I’ve liked:
- Fantasy: Tolkien: The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit (Harry Potter also)
- Classics: Dostoevsky, Steinbeck, Hemingway, Lord of the Flies & The Count of Monte Cristo
- Post-apocalyptic: The Road (McCarthy), Station Eleven (Emily St. John Mandel), The Passage (Justin Cronin)
I’m looking for audiobooks that:
- Work well for long runs (2–3 hours at a time)
- Can keep me engaged during my 6-8 hours of weekly public transport
I’m open to fiction or nonfiction, as long as the narration is strong and the story fits the mood of movement and solitude.
Bonus points for emotional depth, atmosphere, or epic storytelling lol
Thanks so much for any suggestions!

For Fantasy – The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb or the Penric and Desdemoda series by Lois McMaster Bujold
East of Eden, in my opinion, isn’t just the beck Steinbeck novel, but **the** great American novel. You could talk about this book for months. Its themes, the symbolism, the narrative. But more importantly, East of Eden is still a great story. It doesn’t get wrapped up in self-importance and thick prose. What we have, at its core, is still a deeply moving and entertaining family saga.
As far as fantasy goes, The Riyria Chronicles by Michael Sullivan is good if you want something more… I don’t know? PG/PG-13?
If you enjoyed Game of Thrones, you’ll love The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie.
If you want something more in the middle, The Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks.
Give Discworld a look.
If you go to the Discworld Emporium website they have a quick quiz that will recommend you a book.
The audiobooks have just been re-released with updated recordings.
Check out The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie, starting with **The Blade Itself**, narrated by Steven Pacey. Dark, gritty, character-driven fantasy, with a lot of cynical wit/dark humour, 10 books in total, all excellent. The first book sort of just drops you in with various characters, but the overarching plot comes together nicely as the first trilogy progresses, so just keep that in mind if you wonder how it’ll all connect.
**Red Rising** by Pierce Brown, narrated by Tim Gerard Reynolds, is a fast-paced, dystopian, sci-fi/fantasy revenge story, with great characters and interesting world building.
