I am not the most voracious reader compared to most on this sub I suspect. Usually I read roughly 15 books per year, this year I am on track to read about 30.
This has mostly been done by being a bit more particular about what I read and checking the overall review on goodreads before buying rathrr than just reading a blurb and deciding to give it a go. Most of what I've read this year has been rated at least 4 stars.
I really enjoy most of what I've read this year but it does feel like quite a particularly lazy way of choosing what to read (no, of course asking strangers for suggestions isn't equally, or perhaps even more, lazy – how dare you?)
Some books I've particularly enjoyed this year: The Overstory, Buckeye, Sunburn, Wild Dark Shore, There are Rivers in the Sky

Milk Fed by Melissa Broder was 3.6 on GR but I liked it
Matrix by Lauren Groff was 3.7 on GR but I liked it
Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley was absolutely demolished at 3.58 but I liked it, and it won GR best science fiction for 2024!
for what it’s worth I really liked Sunburn and Wild Dark Shore
In contrast there were some really highly rated books on GR (like lessons in chemistry) which I didn’t like
