Looking for a book for my book club

I’m looking for something extremely sad but with comedic relief

Something like the movie — “La vita e Bella” AKA “life is beautiful” a terribly sad story (SPOILER) the dad dies in a concentration camp but he spends the whole movie making jokes and trying to make his son laugh

I want a book that makes you sob but also feel good —- bonus points if it’s historical
