Not to be confused with books were characters or the narrator talk to the reader.

I am few pages into The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemison, I am unsure if I will be into this story as I’m not huge on fantasy, but I love the jovial narrator and how they push on the fourth-wall. It reminds me of one of my favorite games “The Stanley Parable” were the sarcastic narrator and his interaction with the character is a huge part of it’s storytelling.

Are there any books out there were the narrator and characters directly interact, (and furthermore are there any books that actually does this well?) I love it when media plays around with expectations and the restrictions of it’s medium and I would love to get any suggestions on this topic! (And/or books that have similar vibe to what I am describing). Thank you!

    1. ohh youd probably love The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson! its exactly this, i kind of dont want to tell you much since it was such a delight to read blind but let me know if you need me to pitch it more haha

eta: also, i personally disliked this book but it does do what youre describing – Gifted & Talented by Olivie Blake

    2. Sanderson’s Yumi and the Nightmare Painter uses the typical 3rd person POV of a Sanderson, with the added bonus of being told by a character with godlike powers.
