I’ve read A Christmas Carol a few times and watched several films based on his novels but haven’t read anything else by Charles Dickens.

Of the films, the storyline in Our Mutual Friend was my favorite. However, is the book something other readers would recommend? What is your favorite Charles Dickens’ book (excluding the one I’ve read)?

*Great Expectations* is my probably my favourite. I think. It was the first Dickens I read, so holds a certain place in my heart. Upon reflection, that may be the only reason it’s my favourite…

Actually, I think my favourite may be *David Copperfield*, which is probably the better book, honestly. It’s between those two, for a couple of reasons:

Some of the characters in *Great Expectations* are infuriating, which does detract from the story, in my view. It’s more “modern” in its style of drama, I think. Drama for the sake of drama, in other words. It’s a great book, but it’s not without its flaws – speaking subjectively.

*David Copperfield* is a more well rounded story, in my view. It’s a journey that doesn’t rely on the nastiness of others to drive the plot, at least not to the extent of Great Expectations. There are still nasty characters, of course. All Dickens’ works involve nasty characters, but the story here is more about David’s life, and less about the general shitness of certain people.
