I've been reading about Helena Blavatsky and the Theosophical Society, and I'm completely fascinated by that late 19th-century world of occultism, esoteric knowledge, and spiritual quests.

I'm looking for novels where this hidden, mystical underworld is a key part of the plot. Something that captures the atmosphere of secret societies, ancient wisdom, and philosophical exploration.

Can anyone recommend historical fiction or even modern stories that draw on these themes? I'd love to find a book that brings this intriguing history to life.

I read The Books of Jacob this year, by the Polish Nobel Prize author Tokarczuk, and it’s a historical fiction about a religious sect / cult in 18th century Poland and thereabouts.

I picked it up at my local library, and it’s one of my favorite reads of this year. It’s so well researched, well written, and just plain weird at times!

And I loved it. And I’m Polish, so a bit of a more personal connection, I suppose.

And it’s really long. 900 pages.

But worth it, in my opinion!
