      Rosemary Sutcliffe wrote *Beowulf: Dragonslayer* as a novel for young adults, in 1961. It’s a little old-fashioned in style, but still provides a good, clear view of the storyline.

      I think Michael Morpurgo has written a more recent version, but I haven’t read that.

      Alternatively, if you want a wildcard option, the poet Maria Dahvana Headley has written a looser, modern-language (including slang) version of the epic poem. It’s not for everyone, but I very much like the immediacy of the language.
