A friend of mine has his 21st birthday coming up, he told me he'd love a good detective as a gift. Great. Problem is, I have absolutely zero knowledge about the genre, so I'm looking for some recommendations. I know by now most detectives come in series, but I'm kind of looking for a book that can be read on its own (or maybe 2 books?), or at least something with a story that concludes within one book. Or is that pretty much all detectives?
As you can see, I need some help, and would love some recommendations. Thanks!

omg get him “the seven deaths of evelyn hardcastle” if he likes detective stuff! it’s like a murder mystery with a time loop twist and you can totally read it as a standalone.
