I'm thinking about sci-fi or fantasy.
Extra points for well written female characters.

I want to get started with Brandon Sanderson. There's a particular series that I've seen it's been given so much praise but don't remember the name. Maybe recommend me a couple of them?

    And to give more context:
what I love about Pierce Brown's writing is how in depth he gets in his character's psyche, how poetic or lyrical he can be sometimes; I feel like he can create a beautiful moment out of anything, but he also doesn't take the story completely too seriously (he doesn't leave out the silly, comedic or sweet moments). I like the twists, the action, the plotting but also the quieter, slower parts. I like that it feels as if he's exploring humanity and constantly asking questions through his characters, and that those questions don't necessarily have answers.

btw, I want to pass on Dungeon Crawler Carl, I've already seen some reviews on that and I feel like it would most likely be a miss for me

I’m a big fan of the Otherland series by Tad Williams, it’s a bit of an investment cause they’re kinda long but super good. Snowcrash by Neil Stephenson sounds like it would be up your alley. And honestly The Hunger Games was pretty well written and a fun read.

The Salvation Sequence by Peter F. Hamilton. The first book follows a team on their way to a crashed alien spaceship. On the way there they tell stories about their pasts. From there…well, you’ll see.

I think Mistborn is the closest match for Red Rising in Sanderson. The MC is an absolute wrecking ball and there are a few characters who I think match RR for depth.

Ok I know you said no Dungeon Crawler Carl but how you described Brown turning anything into a beautiful moment but not leaving out the silly or comedic or sweet moments and also exploring humanity, DDC would fit perfectly. I’ve read all of the books that are out so far and I think other than the first one I’ve cried or teared up at every book. The first one is a little more silly than the rest but it really is a story about keeping humanity even when the rest of the universe views humans as insignificant.

I also read the first 3 red rising books when they were coming out and loved them and have been meaning to do a re-read and continue with the rest of the books.

    5. have you tried the mistborn series by sanderson? it’s got a cool female protagonist and the magic system is really unique, kinda gives me similar vibes to red rising’s depth but in a fantasy world.
