I cannot sit down and read for longer than 5 minutes without closing any book ive rented and just returning it the same day. everyone i talk to claims books are amazing but every book i was forced to read made me wish I could watch paint dry…

EDIT: Thanks so much to everyone's recommendations, I'm listening to hitchhikers guide to the galaxy right now and this feels right.

What genres have you tried so far? Reading isn’t always for everyone but sometimes it’s just about finding the right genre for you.

Have you tried audiobooks? Maybe the act of looking at pages just isn’t where you are at the moment.

John Scalzi and Simon Rich write funny stuff that’s pretty quick and easy to get through.
Chuck Palahniuk’s books tend to be quick reads that are engaging (and dark, but still funny)

    4. Some thoughts, not necessarily in order. Consider them all and try one.

      1. Maybe find a book that is related to a movie you like or that a movie was based on.

      2. Pick a non-fiction, biography, or memoir of something or someone you want to learn or know more about. Could be an athlete, musician, historical figure, etc.

      3. Try some short stories in a genre you think you’d like. You can build up in size. Shorter books tend to cut to the chase faster, which can be easier to read.

    5. I’m an adult male who loves reading but who feels the need to be getting things done. I highly recommend audiobooks if the issue is that a story isn’t holding all your attention. I’ll get chores done around the yard or house, clean my garage, or pack and repack my camping gear while listening to a book.

As for books, I am a fan of Dungeon Crawler Carl, which tends to be fast paced. A bit like Running man meets the A-team in a Dungeons & Dragons story, with a side of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Hilarious in my opinion, but not everyone’s thing. The audiobooks are fantastic.

Kings of the Wyld has a great fantasy adventure party meets The Expendables sort of feel.

Starter Villain by John Scalzi. Super funny.

Try the audio book of Project Hail Mary and listen while you go for a walk/run/wash dishes or whatever

      Try something with short chapters.

      In all seriousness, Moby Dick.

For something more recent, something by vigdis hjorth.

Find the books your favorite movies and tv shows are based on. You already know you’ll like the story but you get to experience in a new and usually better way.

I don’t know if you like fantasy, but Riyria by Michael J Sullivan is really amazing
As others here have said I would also recommend audio instead,
