I just recently finished Julia by Sandra Newman, a feminist take on 1984 which retells the story through the eyes of Winston Smith's love interest, Julia.

A while back, I read 2084: The End of the World by Algerian author Boualem Sansal which imagines an Islamist totalitarian state in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. (Sansal recently received a pardon and was released from jail after having been charged with undermining Algeria's national unity and insulting public institutions for an article he wrote.)

Both books were excellent in their own ways. What other books should I read next that are either derivative of or inspired by 1984?

I’m not sure this fits the bill, but you might find it interesting anyway.

*Finding George Orwell in Burma* by Emma Larkin looks at the time Orwell spent in Burma, and the perceptions of his books in the area more recently.
