Rereading harry potter as an adult and it is somewhat disappointing compared to as a kid. I wish there was more magic. Theory and actual use of potions, using more than like 8 spells. Battles are boring just shooting the same spells back and forth. And harry is somewhat incompetent (I understand he is a child). If you are destined to fight the dark lord, wouldn’t you want to like study and get good at magic? He has little talent, ie sucks at incantation-less casting, doesn’t actually het better at potions after using the prince’s book all year. They have sm hw but never talk abt what they are learning like how magic works.
I understand these are children’s books. They are good children’s books, but now I want something as magical as an adult. Light novels are also a welcome rec
TLDR:
Any recs for fantasy books with magic like harry p, but more theory and lore and such
TY!

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel is like an adult take on a magic England during wartime. Alternate history/magical realism. The magic that exists in this universe is rare and requires a lot of studying. Otherwise the history of England is the same as real life.
Name of the Wind is the beginning of an unfinished trilogy but with an adult wizard college. Two books are written and the 3rd probably wil never be, but man do I love them. It’s also got an underdog prodigy MC but unlike Harry, he is more ambitious and studious. This is a fantasy setting.
