I just finished reading Totem and I was wondering why Mr. Hooting disagreed with Beebe that the totem was gargling when he knows that it is? Why do different people hear different things? I understand this short story is an allegory towards how First Nations were treated in Canada, but I don’t understand why curtain people heard different sounds, what is this supposed to be an allegory for?
