Is there a story where the character discovers something that maybe could be a conspiracy but it is so weird and beyond their understanding that it makes them overwhelmed and “uncomfortably itchy in the head” ?
Maybe something in the spirit of that diner scene in Mulholland drive. I’m not going to pretend that I 100% understand everything in that movie or even that specific scene but I love the premise and atmosphere.
Basically, paranoia of Truman show mixed with the weirdness and unsettling ambiguity of the diner scene , like if Truman never figured out what’s happening. Preferably it would be set in our real world.
And I’m not interested in cosmic horror.
Thank you for your time.

2 very different suggestions that fit this prompt:
Piranesi, by Susanna Clarke
1984, by George Orwell
They by Robert Heinlein.
Brother Brontë by Fernando Flores. Hard to describe what it’s about, the cover description is inaccurate. Focuses on the day to day lives of women in a surreal, magical realism infused dystopia. Prophetic dreams, eerie coincidences, claustrophobic atmosphere.
