When I was a kid I devoured every Sherlock Holmes book I could find. I probably didn't understand how clever and cool half of the dialogue was at the time, I was just more into the mystery being solved and how the brilliant Holmes would figure stuff out… I used to love Hound of the Baskervilles. Felt like a fireside ghost story.
The other day my teen son asked me something about a trending news thing that I hadn't heard about and didn't care about. Something in Seattle or somewhere (we live on the east coast) and I remembered the line from Holmes, "What the deuce is it to me?"
the line comes from an all-time exchange where Watson is flabbergasted that Holmes doesn't care about space or the Solar System at all… it's a great exchange and leads to Holmes's brain attic speech, which is so apt right now considering the 24/7 inundation we have to all the news and information from the entire world available to us. I wrote a column about it here and why it's such a great scene and analogy for us. Writing that is 135 years old but is timeless. Brilliant dialogue and character development in one quick exchange: https://midlifemale.com/genius-mind-trick-unclog-brain-sherlock-holmes/
