I enjoy reading about the Civil War, but I’m looking for books that go beyond specific battles. I’m especially interested in the political, social, and human sides of the conflict. So far I’ve read: -Crossroads of Freedom by McPherson. -Reading the Man on Robert E. Lee by Elizabeth Brown Taylor. -The Demon of Unrest by Larson and Lincoln by -David Donald Hubert. I also have The Mighty Scourge by McPherson on the way.

You could add in some fiction. It was ages ago, but I remember enjoying Cold Mountain.
You’ve already read one McPherson book, so my suggestion should be in line.
Battle Cry if Freedom by James McPherson is among the best single volume books on the civil war, and it deals heavily with the political side of things.
I also suggest Patriotic Treason by Evan Carton. Technically it’s right before the civil war, but it gives a great background of the man who had fiery passions and misguided actions.
