I’m doing a personal research project on what it means to make a sacrifice and whether any sacrifice or good deed can be made in true altruistic fashion or if it’s inherently selfish. Suggestions don’t have to be solely nonfiction, I just want any book (fiction or nonfiction) that analyzes the above themes. I’m re-reading Martyr by Kaveh Akbar right now bc it kind of touches on the topic I’m trying to learn more about. Any other suggestions are appreciated!!

“Silence” by Shusaku Endo is one of the greatest works I’ve ever read on sacrifice and martyrdom. About a Portuguese Jesuit Missionary who travels to Japan at a time where Christians faced extreme persecution in the 1600’s. It’s historical fiction and essentially examines God’s silence when people are suffering and sacrificing themselves in his name.
Also a really great movie adaptation directed by Martin Scorcese in 2016.
