Hi, Im a 21yo guy, wanting to get into reading. Im looking for fiction, preferably mystery or crime drama but im open for other genres. Some pieces of media I enjoy (in no particular order):

    -Destiny
    -Signalis
    -The wither
    -Elden Ring/Dark souls
    -Cyberpunk

    Shows/Films:
    -Evangelion
    -Lotr
    -Peaky Blinders
    -Mickey 13
    -Seraph of the end
    -Hell's Paradise

Im not looking for something necessarily similar to the stories I just listed but they might work to get to know me and what i like, better.

    1. Based on your preferences, I’d recommend the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs (creator of Tarzan, John Carter), Robert E Howard (creator of Conan the Cimmerian, Red Sonya (not Sonja), Solomon Kane) and H Rider Haggard (creator of Allan Quatermain, Ayesha).

Stephen King has a very approachable style of writing. He’s known as the horror guy, but honestly it only makes up a portion of his catalogue. I’d check out his works and just start with whichever jacket summary sounds appealing to you. *Mr. Mercedes* is a relatively recent novel of his that is a crime thriller. For a more epic fantasy experience—*The Dark Tower* series by him is a truly epic journey that touches upon damn near every genre you could list. With him being so popular you’ll be able to find a lot of his stuff at your local library most likely.

The other recommendation I can’t express enough praise for is a series of books called *Dungeon Crawler Carl*. It’s a ridiculous title for a book—I know. But don’t let it put you off. I think it’s *exactly* the book series (7 with an 8th out in May and 10 expected overall) I think you should get into. The audiobooks in particular are amazing but can only be accessed with Audible. I do believe they’re doing a 3 months for 99¢ a month which would get you the first three books for 3 dollars. The books are new and I’ve never seen the series in a library, but it’s popular enough that it could be checked out all the time. Either way, the series is sort of like a novelization of a video game and I think you’d quickly get immersed into reading with it.

    3. DEAD BODIES:

      MARY ROACH –

“Stiff : the curious lives of human cadavers”

      CAITLIN DOUGHTY –

“ Will my cat eat my eyeballs? : big questions from tiny mortals about death”

“ From here to eternity : traveling the world to find the good death”

“ Smoke gets in your eyes : and other lessons from the crematory”

      JUDY MELINEK –

“ Working stiff : two years, 262 bodies, and the making o

    4. Pulphead by John Jeremiah Sullivan . Short stories to get you reading.
We the Animals by Justin Torres. Excellent book.

    5. Dungeon Crawler Carl is a good “it’s been a while, I need something fun and engaging to get the ball rolling again” series I’ve recommended to several buddies in your situation and they’re all obsessed with it now, so I’d give that a try!
