I hope it's okay to post some backstory as a clarifier, things are difficult right now.

I'm struggling a lot with my health, physical as well as mental. I'm awaiting a nearly-guaranteed cancer diagnosis, and in the meantime I haven't been able to do any of the things I love. I used to love reading when I was in high school, and I'm finding comfort in it again.

I just finished The Handmaid's Tale and absolutely loved it, but I'm looking for something less dark to fall into, something to distract me from reality for a bit. One of my favorite books as a kid was The Lost Years of Merlin by T. A. Barron, and I'd love to read something like that again, something that makes me feel like I'm on a light-hearted and riveting adventure. I've tried The Name of the Wind, I love Rothfuss's voice but the story itself is a bit too grim for me with not enough payoff, and I'm honestly not as into Lord of the Rings as I wish I was. I've heard brilliant things about Brandon Sanderson and I've got the Mistborn series on hold, but it's a long wait at my library, understandably. What else vibes like that? I want adventure, magic, hikes through enchanted forests. Bonus points if there's no misogyny, and please no deathly illnesses that remind me too much of reality 😅

Well, I would recommend Lord of the Rings, since it is the greatest high fantastic story of all time, imo. Seems you dont like it, though, which is such a shame considering it has deep themes about little people overcoming immense difficulties. Persevering through tough times, despite scant odds. It seems like basically the perfect book to remind someone that, “Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.”
