I teach creative writing classes and for my Advanced students, they're writing novellas and doing a great job at it. As we are getting close to the end of the semester, I wanted to give them gifts to motivate them for crossing the finish line. One such gift is either a book, or a fountain pen. For this particular student, she has listed To the Lighthouse, Wuthering Heights, and East of Eden as her top three, so anything similar would be greatly appreciated.

Bird by Bird
by Anne Lamott
As an advanced creative writing student, she’ll find Anne Lamott’s candid and humorous advice on the writing process incredibly motivating and reassuring, especially as she navigates the complexities of her novella.
Lamott’s emphasis on taking things ‘bird by bird’ offers a practical and inspiring perspective that will help her cross the finish line with confidence.
there can be no better gift for a creative writing student than Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro. There are no books like the ones you mentioned: each is, in its own way, utterly unique. That is also true of Ishiguro’s book. A creative writing student could spend years trying to figure out how the HELL he did it. And just what the hell he did do. It’s not at all clear.
