I absolutely love his films, particularly “After Life”and “Like Father, Like Son,” and am looking for books that show a natural and intimate perspective of people’s lives. One book I read recently that I think somewhat matches this style is “Pachinko” by Min Jin Lee (amazing book btw).
I’m open to any genres, but I’m not looking for stories that are extremely depressing or told in a frantic or anxiety-inducing style. I’m mostly fine with reading about heavy topics (would like to avoid SA though) and morally gray characters, but would prefer a more gentle and understated approach.
Bonus points for any book that’s really similar to “After Life” as it’s my favorite of his. Thanks!

If you’re into Kore‑eda’s vibe (After Life is also my fave of his), I think you’d really enjoy the Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa, in short; It’s about a math genius whose memory only lasts 80 minutes and the relationship he builds with his housekeeper and her son, it gave me the same bittersweet feeling as After Life. Highly recommend!
