A recent post on Les Miserables made me recall a time in my early 20s when, after travelling for an extended period and with many days of bus rides ahead of me on an ever-dwindling budget, I went to a bookstore in Brazil. I pulled up the calculator on my flip phone and started determining which books had the lowest price per page, letting me stretch my money as far as possible. And this, friends, is how I was introduced to Victor Hugo and Les Miserables (a great book, nonetheless).
