I don’t read a lot of popular new books, I read a lot of classics, I’ve been reading a lot of Agatha Christie, but nothing is grabbing my attention right now. I’ve been reading a ton lately and I have already passed by goal for the year but I just feel bored by everything right now. What are some good page turners that don’t feel like I’m wasting my time on something poorly written or mass produced like a lot of the romantacy coming out now. Something exciting and gripping but also well written ? No YA please 🙏

Have you read Rebecca by Daphne du
Maurier? Gripping page turner with stunning prose
True crime extraordinary People Who Eat Darkness by (journalist ) Richard Loyd Parry
Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. Beautiful writing, interesting characters, mood, setting. Hits like Scooby-Doo meets Wednesday Addams as written by a classicist.
I liked Josephine Tey’s “The Daughters of Time”.
A few that I couldn’t put down when I read them
The Will of the Many
The Power of the Dog
Red Rising
Classics? If you haven’t already, please give The Scarlet Pimpernel a shot. It’s one of my favorite books, is the very definition of fun, and BONUS POINTS is written by a woman and has a woman protagonist.
And if you’ve read that and want something modern read The Lies of Locke Lamora. It’s Scarlet Pimpernel meets Ocean’s Eleven meets Oliver Twist.
Have you read any Dorothy Sayers or Georgette Heyer mysteries? Same era as Christie and very well done. But sometimes if you’ve been reading one author and loving them, it’s best to change things up entirely so you aren’t trying to compare. So maybe try a classic. I think Haunting of Hill House definitely counts as a page turner. Dracula probably does too. Or maybe Christie’s inspirations. Hound of the Baskervilles is a great read. Or Our Mutual Friend by Dickens. Or go for a total switch? It’s the holiday season, so maybe Bridget Jones Diary? Or its source: Pride and Prejudice?
The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Excellent world- and character- building
You might like Lauren Hildebrand. Unbroken and Seabiscuit are absolutely gripping. I rarely read nonfiction, I have to read a lot for work so I usually stick with fun fiction, but her writing is so engaging.
