I'm in a hankering for a good epic war fantasy book. Anything in the same vein as The Dernai Saga by Gemmel or Powder Mage trilogy.
To be more specific I want something that is based in the trence of war, planning and training, not so much political but it needs to be fantasy based.
Any suggestions welcome.

Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. Takes place during the Napoleonic wars, focused on the “aerial corps” of dragon riders. There are 9 books in the series, so pretty epic. The majority of the books does not take place on the battlefield but there are great battle scenes and great worldbuilding around military life.
The Malazan Book of the Fallen novels by Steven Erikson – they follow a hard-bitten squad of soldiers called the Bridgeburners. The first book is Gardens of the Moon.

I love the Powder Mage trilogy, I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s read it. I’d say the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson covers that base pretty well. First book’s premise is a group of revolutionaries with magic planning to assassinate the Lord Ruler, their immortal king.
*The Stormlight Archive* (same author) is also good war fantasy.
