I remember Harry Potter novels were the hot topic around 20 years ago. Almost everyone in the world were excited about these novels. So many people bought these novels. The movies and the movie cast were also very popular back then.

Has Harry Potter novels lost its popularity it once had 20 years ago? Has those novels have become 'some random' novels?

    1. A lot of people stopped supporting JK Rowling, so, by extension everything Harry Potter. This is bound to affect the popularity of the work.

    2. No. Where I work sells books and the amount sold hasn’t changed much. Its hard to keep them in stock when we get them.

    3. Most books lose popularity after 20 years lol

Also, those books weren’t particularly amazing even back then. But they were simple and filled a void other authors hadn’t managed to fill for the mainstream for a while.

Seeing how many fanfictions are written of this fandom, I can tell you it’s still pretty popular yeah.

    5. They’re still quite popular and a HBO show is in the works. Though obviously it isn’t as popular as it was when it was being released, hype always falls with time.

JK Rowling turned out to be a transphobic piece of work, and I think the audience of that series found her views to be pretty terrible.

I think that killed Harry Potter as a cultural phenomenon.

    7. While it’s probably not as significant as a factor as I wish it was, JK Rowling being an asshole has definitely turned a portion of the fan base off.

    8. Huh?

Harry Potter is literally getting a reboot next year. For the last decade there’s been multiple spin-offs like Fantastic Beast and the stageplay. Harry Potter is still one of Legos most lucrative IPs.

I feel like this post is a troll. There are lots of 20 year old books that were ACTUALLY forgotten (like the Spiderwick Chronicles) but HP is not one of them.

JK is still very rich and very active. She’s also (obligatory mention) a rotten and evil person to trans people – and also anyone who doesn’t agree with her. She basically hates the original HP actors and sees them as ‘ungrateful’ brats.

But no – Harry Potter is not some random book series people forgot. But good God, I wish it was.

Yes and no. People Interact with the fanfiction side more now, which is quite different from the book actual content. Either way it benefits the author.

    10. There’s not as much hype over them currently. The books and Legos and such are still being bought, but it’s not really getting shoved into people’s awareness since, at this time, there’s no movies or books coming out.

With that said, when it gets closer to HBO releasing the TV series, you’ll see things pick up again. There’ll be new toys for the show, new editions of the books, and so on.

    11. I think Harry Potter has had a huge impact culturally and that’s not going to change any time soon. They’ve definitely lost their popularity but what would you expect? 20 years ago the series was still unfinished so of course it was in the cultural zeitgeist. The author certainly hasn’t helped maintain the series’ cultural relevance.

    12. Just because something is popular does not mean that it is good or will age well.

This may be an unpopular reddit viewpoint as we all are representative of the very principal of literary taste and achievement.

However, it is true. For context (non literary), the Macarena was also very popular at one time.

    13. The books still fly off the shelves, a show is in the works, and the movies are still regularly playing on cable and streaming.

Some people renounced them because of JK Rowlings views. But the world is so huge it seems a bit easier to separate art from the artist for others.

    14. People used to line up before midnight for every book and movie released. Few cultural phenomenons reach that height. The only franchise I can think of that comes close to retaining that level of hype is pokemon. And then there’s still something to be said about the energy surrounding pokemon when it first hit the west.

    15. Is it less popular than it was 20 years ago when it was brand new and hot out the oven? Yes, obviously.

Still the most popular book series in the world by an absolute fucking landslide though.

They are releasing a remake of the series in 2027, so I think the books will have a renaissance. But I saw a lot of Harry Potter characters this Halloween. The generation that grew up with Harry Potter is now introducing it to their kids.

    17. Being into Harry Potter has become a way of signaling that you are anti-trans, so they’ve gotten less popular with people that *aren’t* anti-trans.

    18. They’re not new anymore, so there’s no more media hype.
Also, less people need to buy a new copy as so many are in circulation and can be “handed down”.

    19. Rowling has gone out of her way to sabotage her own fanbase. This has had an impact on the legacy of the books and their ongoing popularity. I’m not just talking about her outing herself as a terrible human being but also how she can’t resist the urge to go back and tinker with the books through her tweets. “Oh, so and so character was always like this.” Well, why didn’t the books show it then? Speaking of books, the prequel books were just not very good and the movies made of them went nowhere fast.

Also, in the 20 years since, people have started seeing flaws that were missed in all of the hype like “the Wizarding world is actually a really terrible place in a lot of ways.” House Elf slavery. The incompetence of the people in charge particularly in the Ministry of Magic. Dumbledore more or less setting Harry up to be a sacrificial lamb all along. Snape being that creepy stalker guy who never gets over the girl he had a crush on. Etc etc.
