Hi there! So a little of what I’m looking for – I’m over the ‘Tropic of Cancer’ type prose where a white man bums around. As a POC I have a hard time relating to those types of tales. BTW hated that book.

Unironically, the first book I ever loved is American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis when I was a teen. Around this time I also became familiar with Vonnegut who I love even now.

The next book that really captivated me in my early 20s was The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand (unironically again) – I just really liked the idea of personifying philosophy through fiction.

I’m in my late 20s and the book that I have read that I could not put down was A Thousand Splendid Suns. The writing is some of the best I’ve ever read.

I am looking to get into more very captivating literature. I like other sub genres playing apart of course like romance, history, etc. I just want something when after I’m done, I feel like I could write a thesis on it.

Books I’ve felt that way about:

    Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison

    The Stranger by Albert Camus

No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

    Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier

They can be classic, they can be contemporary – I’m open to that.

Edit – Right now I’m reading Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. I’m 200 pages in and have mixed feelings.

    Thank you!
