I recently read Alasdair Gray's Lanark and was completely captivated by the sections set in the strange, bureaucratic, and sunless Unthank. The atmosphere of that underground city has really stuck with me.

I'm looking for other novels where an underground, hidden, or liminal city/society is a major setting. I love the sense of claustrophobia, weird rules, and social allegory it creates. It doesn't have to be exactly the same, just that feeling of being in a world beneath the world.

Any recommendations for books that explore these kinds of subterranean or hidden urban landscapes?
