I read a lot. My mother reads a lot too. Sometimes we swap suggestions. Sometimes we like one another’s suggestions, sometimes we don’t at all.
We have never had a good relationship. Books are the only thing we really exchange thoughts and ideas about.
She was abusive when I was growing up because she had her own addiction issues. She’s clean now, but for the most part I grew up with an awful mother, when she was present at all.
Despite all that, I want to give her a gift that shows the value of mother/daughter relationships. Even when they aren’t perfect.
I wondered if anyone had any recommendations of books that show the struggles of parenthood or parent, child dynamics. But still has a positive outlook or ending. Where despite everything, the theme that is most prominent is the love between them.
I’ve often had to love my mother harder than she loved me. Because her addiction was her priority for most of my life. Sometimes she tries to love me now, and I do appreciate it. I’m just grown and don’t need a mother now. However I do love her. I’d like something that shows a kind, endless love. That overrides everything else.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Also a rough outline if possible. As I’d hate to give her something triggering or that feels more like I’m pointing a blaming finger at her struggles. As that’s the last thing I’m trying to achieve.
Thank you in advance.
