I'm looking for (recent-ish) character-driven fantasy books that are emotional. And specifically, where there are only two characters. I don't like romance, but I understand that with this premise it's kind of inevitable that there are many of those. I recently read A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers, but I would like something… less cozy.

It’s scifi and it does center on romance but for the rest I think This is how you lose the time war by El Mothar and Gladstone could be a good fit
