Hello! I'm looking for a specific niche of military fiction that may or may not actually exist, and I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone knows something like it.
I'm looking for military fiction stories set primarily on a base or military installment during a hot war in a modern time period (i.e. post-Vietnam and not sci-fi)? Major bonus points if the story centers on dynamics between the branches/ranks/etc.
Ideally, something that has more drama and interpersonal or political conflict over action, too – The Things They Carried / M\A*S*H* over Tom Clancy. (That said, I liked Larry Correia's indulgent gun descriptions in high school, so points for that too.)
Some I can think of that get close to what I'm looking for are M\A*S*H* (the TV series), Catch-22, and The Caine Mutiny (maybe?), although none of these are modern. Some surface-level searching also led me to The Watch by Joydeep Roy-Bhattacharya, Fobbit by David Abrams, and The Valley by John Renehan; I'd appreciate perspectives on those if anyone's read them.
Help and recommendations appreciated, thank you all!
