Romance doesn’t need to be the centerpiece, just a solid complement to the story. A good example is 11/22/63 by Stephen King. I’m drawn to themes like time travel, end of the world scenarios, dystopias, and strong hero arcs.

This is How You Lose the Time War…. It’s short and has lovely prose.

Christopher Nolan probably wished he wrote this book.

If you are down for a graphic novel. Saga of the swamp thing by alan moore (watchmen, v for vendetta), is a beautifully written gothic romance/horror/sci-fi that is way better than it has any right to be.

I’ve described Full Speed to a Crash Landing, by Beth Revis (and sequels), as “romantasy but make it science fiction.” I do NOT like romantasy as a rule, but I had so much fun with these novellas.

    4. The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. Time travel, romance, strong heroes. It’s all there
