Some I've read that master this IMO are the series by Maggie Stiefvater featuring SHIVER, LINGER and FOREVER, THE SILENCE IN THE GARDEN by William Trevor AND the hills at home by Nancy Clark. Another one that captured my heart and which I still enjoy is a gem from my childhood called THE BOMBERS' MOON by Betty Vander Els.
It takes a particular skill to compassionately portray realistic characters going through hard times who have incredible bonds with one another anyway.
I'd love to find more novels like this to add to my collection.
Also, they need not have been published recently.
