I don’t read a lot of WWII-era fiction, but some historical fiction books that I’ve really enjoyed were:
– My Name Is Red (Pamuk); Ottoman Empire, ~1600
– Taiko (Yoshikawa); Japanese unification, ~1500
– Master and Commander (O’Brian); British Navy vs. Napoleon
– Half of a Yellow Sun (Adichie); Nigeria/Biafra, 1960s. Thematically, this might be the closest to what you’re looking for?
– Homegoing (Gyasi); Ghana/US, 1700s to present
– The Silver Pigs (Davis); Roman Empire, AD 70
– Gates of Fire (Pressfield); Sparta, 400s BC
