I am obsessed with Kapuściński – a Polish author who had been a journalist all of his life and wrote reportage books.

What I love about his books is that they are a perfectly balanced mix of facts related to the events he was reporting on, his own personal experiences while visiting the place, historical anecdotes about the country he was in, as well as his thoughts and reflections regarding the aforementioned things. I feel like this combination is great if you want to learn about a country/region on many levels – cultural, political, social, historical. It also offers you the perspective of the author, which makes it easier to relate to and immerse yourself, makes it more personal and 'human' than just dumping facts.

I am looking for authors similar to him. I am especially interested in books about the Middle East (particularly Iraq and Kurdistan), Central Asia, Russia/USSR and Africa.
