Hey guys! I am an avid reader who desperately wants her children to enjoy reading at least a little bit lol. My 17 year old daughter isn’t opposed to reading, but she doesn’t go out of her way to find books and doesn’t like the ones I’ve lent her (I read a ton of fantasy romances, which totally valid if that’s not your thing). She has a huge imagination and creates a ton of unique OCs and art, so I don’t think it’s necessarily an opposition to fantasy, just the ones I read.
There are two Roblox games she’s told me about that have super unique plots and she loves reading comics/fanfiction about them. One is Dandy’s World and the other is Forsaken. The Dandy’s World comics she reads are just fanfics based off the characters and not based in the game world, while I believe the Forsaken comics she reads are also based in the Forsaken world. For those unfamiliar with those games, here’s a list of themes across both of them that I’ve picked up on:
Gambling
Drug dealing
LGBTQ
Multiple main characters and POVs
Young adult characters
Modern-ish setting
I think basically Urban Fantasy
The Forsaken one includes some sort of afterlife where all of the characters end up. One character specifically she was telling me about was a gambling addict that has the power to flip a coin and if it’s heads he’ll have good luck. He ends up being backstabbed at a casino, killed, and pops up in this afterlife.
I’ve been googling alllll day haha. I’ve got The Last Sun (The Tarot Sequence) by K. D. Edwards in my Amazon cart right now. I don’t think she’d be opposed to a detective plotline but I don’t think she’d like it if it was the only/main plotline. She really likes multiple main characters whose stories intertwine.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading! It’s a very specific request so I totally get it if there aren’t any books that meet all of the criteria, but I’m hoping there are a few that check off a couple 🙂 I appreciate any suggestions!
