Which books would you read to start learning about the Middle Ages as a whole?

With Christmas coming up and my girlfriend wanting to pivot from fiction to reading about history, especially the Middle Ages, I come to you asking for recommendations on what to gift her.
If it helps, she really enjoyed the way Elena Ferrante briefly described Naples' history in the Neapolitan Novels,
