I know a 7 year old boy in my building who has been reading and had been read mostly Captain underpants and Dog Man books.

His mom asked me for recommendations for what other books would be more appropriate and help improve his reading now that he’s in those important developmental years.

I’ve recommended books from Roald Dahl, maybe Tintin and Asterix since that’s what got me into reading, are there better starters for a 7 year old who does need to improve his reading?

    1. If that’s what he enjoys then encourage it, don’t label it as “bad” reading. Around that age my kids enjoyed the Magic Treehouse, Origami Yoda and How to Train Your Dragon books, now as adults they have varied and sometimes quite complex reading tastes. Having a parent/carer read to him regularly and audiobooks are also a good option to provide positive experiences of literature and expand his reading horizons

      Comics!

Asterix is a good move. I wouldn’t do Tintin yet, it’s a bit too serious.

Comic strips in books can be great at that age. Calvin & Hobbes is a winner. Garfield works too. Charlie Brown also has some appeal to young ones.
