A friend of mine loves games, loves playing games, and really enjoys it when a game plays with the fact that it is a game to help develop the story and immerse the player. An example he gave was Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and the mechanics of that game that force you to think about the relationship between the two characters, their interaction with their environment and each other.
He then asked if I could recommend any books that similarly play with the medium of Being A Book. Both of us arrived at House of Leaves but that's not an easy one to get your head round. My only other suggestions were The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin for its three storylines, and The Eyre Affair for how much fun Fforde is having at the expense of the story of Jane Eyre.
Can anyone recommend anything else that similarly plays with the medium of Being A Book? The story does not need to be sci-fi/fantasy, but those are my preferred genres.
